Think Bigger Context
When I feel stuck or overwhelmed by a task, situation, or project, I remind myself of an epic challenge that felt impossible. It was only after it was over that I understood how I managed to pull it off.
The challenge was a 622-kilometre charity bike ride. The idea that I could ride 385 miles in six days straight seemed ludicrously ambitious. After all, I was turning 50, hadn’t been on a bike in years, or owned one since I was a kid, I never had a great sense of balance, and I was overweight and out of shape. There’s not a lot of physical strain sitting writing comedy.
It was only after the rally was over that I understood how I had managed to pull this off.
It was simple. I didn’t sign up for myself. I had a bigger context. I had a lot of people cheering me on, and their support sustained me while training, and later, on the hottest day of the summer, when other cyclists were falling by the wayside from dehydration and heat stroke.
