With ADHD Compliments Feel Complicated

Those of us on the ADHD or Autism Spectrum can struggle with compliments and congratulations. Why? To start with, as kids, we receive far more criticisms and corrections than our neurotypical peers. We don’t know quite what to make of it. Or even whether we should believe it.
Over the course of 40 years as a comedian, I received a lot of positive feedback. (Laughter, Applause, Positive Reviews.) When I stepped into the role of an advocate and educator for people with ADHD, the gratitude was beyond anything I experienced. And at first, I handled it poorly.
Then my wife, the heart behind everything we’ve done, gave me some very timely advice, by invoking the name Monty Python, and suddenly I realized how I’d left people who were genuinely and deeply grateful for what we’d done for them.
