They Don’t Understand ADHD
It’s frustrating, even infuriating at times, when people dismiss your diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. You explain what it’s like, you share how hard it is, you lay out how it has been screwing you up, and they give you a look that says, “Whatever.”
You start to believe that no one else understands what it’s like for you.
Guess what? They don’t. How could they?
How could I expect neurotypical folks to truly understand how my mind works when I don’t fully understand it. Heck, the scientists researching ADHD don’t fully understand it.
What’s helped me let go of that frustration is realize ‘understanding, compassion, and empathy’ works both ways. I’ve come to appreciate what it’s like to for my friends and family to live with my ADHD. I can’t completely appreciate what it’s like, but I know that while it can be disheartening and exhausting for me, it can be hard on them as well.
