When I was diagnosed, way back in 2001, most people thought ADHD was a joke, a scam, an excuse, or just a behavioural problem in boys due to permissive parents, lazy teachers, and video games.

I discovered the extent of skepticism and misinformation when I naively shared my ‘good news’ with anyone who would listen. I was mortified by the pushback and sneering dismissal. That upset became the fuel that led my wife and me to produce our documentary, ‘ADD & Loving It?!’

But the reaction that stung the most, at least at the time, was my mom’s five-word response to my diagnosis. Now, looking back, I realize that in a way, what she said was true. In fact, it made sense of my ADHD diagnosis.
