Do I Really Have ADHD?
So you’ve been reading about the symptoms of ADHD, and they sound painfully familiar. Or perhaps you’ve gone further and obtained a proper diagnosis.
But over time, you’re self-confidence, never strong to begin with, wavers. Videos on social media dismiss the idea. Friends and family are casually dismissive, “You’re fine. You need to buckle down. You have to stop looking for excuses.”
And so many people, perhaps afraid of the idea of a ‘mental disorder,’ abandon their treatment plan and resign themselves to the belief that, “This is just how I am.”
What follows are years of unnecessary struggle until, at the end of their rope, they are forced to accept that the diagnosis is valid. Some never accept the possibility and continue to stumble their way through life, hamstrung by an insidious saboteur.
I suspect that everyone who has been diagnosed with ADHD questions the diagnosis. “Maybe everyone else is right. Maybe I just need to try harder.”
I still go there. It’s natural. Perhaps even healthy. It’s only a problem if you discount the evidence of your own experience and listen to the opinions of others who don’t understand what ADHD and all the ways it undermines your best efforts. I outline some tips that work for me.
