ADHD Procrastination? Just Start! Here’s How

Everyone procrastinates to some degree. When you have Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, it can be a constant challenge.

Often, we procrastinate because a task is too complex, involving too many steps. Doing your taxes pops to mind.

There may be major consequences if we get it wrong. Or the task is dreadfully boring. We may have lost interest. Or want it to be perfect. There are dozens of reasons to procrastinate. (See my video on 7 Good Reasons to Procrastinate.)

But all too often, I can be stopped by something that is simple and quick to do. This week, it was picking up my old socks that had been lying on the floor for 3 days.

Whenever I’m stopped by something that is ridiculously trivial, rather than scold myself, I allow myself to appreciate the ridiculous triviality and do it.

Spending 45 seconds to complete a task beats a half hour of ruminating, “What’s wrong with me?”

And there’s a bonus. It’s called ‘momentum.’
