What’s Wrong With Me? Nothing!

When you have ADHD, whether you’re an adult, adolescent, or child, it’s hard not to feel broken, damaged, or abnormal. And before you’re diagnosed, and life is a frustrating struggle with no explanation, it’s natural to ask, “What’s wrong with me?”

ADHD? No, there’s nothing wrong with me.

Hey I agree, ADHD isn’t wrong, it’s just really disruptive to daily life, it creates extra problems that you’ve got to solve.

If it wasn’t a problem then people wouldn’t be arriving at their doctor’s office despondent, despairing, lost and saying what’s wrong with me?

And by wrong what they mean is why am I always late, getting fired, always broke, why don’t I finish whatever I start, or follow instructions, why can’t I stop fidgeting, or blurting out, or losing things, why do I interrupt people, why do I lose track of things that I’m doing and never get them done? Why do I have zero willpower?

Yeah these are not happy people in for a quick checkup. I know I was one of them.

These are people who are at the end of their tether, depressed, frustrated, confused.

They have huge hearts but little patience, big dreams but very few successes, they work as hard as they can but they have little to show for it, there’s nothing wrong with them, they’re not lazy or cruel or selfish or conniving, they’re often bright, funny, open, insightful, but they feel lost because they keep self sabotaging.

I mean they want to succeed and fit in, I know I did but everything is such a struggle, and most of all they want to feel normal, just want to feel normal.

Stop Trying to Fit In!

And I came to see that as a mistake even before I was diagnosed, if you have ADHD you’re not normal, you’re not average, you’re not run-of-the-mill, ordinary, you’re extraordinary, and not always in helpful ways because the world is designed for people who are ordinary, regular, predictable.

My suggestion, choose as I did at a fairly early age to let go of normal, who wants to just fit in, who wants to do what’s expected all the time, do what everyone else is doing.

Why? they’ve got it covered, that’s not what the world needs, it needs people who think outside the box, who find different paths, who disrupt the status quo, status quo being Latin for the current state of the world, where billionaires never have enough, and billions of people struggle to put food on the table, where the planet is dying and people are pursuing all the wrong things, more stuff, more stuff, believing that at some point it’ll be enough and they’ll be happy, hoping to get into heaven and never realizing this is heaven, this planet, this 8,000 kilometer wide ball of miracles, it’s astounding.

Be Yourself

So I’d like to suggest be comfortable being you, and use your smarts to find ways to bend the world around you to fit you, to create original strategies and systems that minimize your ADHD challenges, cuz there are a lot, and maximize your potential strengths, because you have some, and then once you get the master you will be thankful that you are not like everyone else.
