Why Adults with ADHD NEED to Fidget
Remember when schools started handing out Fidget Toys for kids who had ADHD? A great idea, as having something to occupy the hands can help with focus.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t long before every kid in the class had one, until the whizzing sound of ball bearings drowned out the teacher. Great idea in theory. Not so much in practice.
That said, fidgeting, foot tapping, pacing, and rocking in one’s seat can often help people with ADHD to focus. That seems counterintuitive. Indeed, most neurotypical folks might well find these things distracting.
However, for those of us with ADHD, rather than adding another challenge to our attention, the movement can be soothing, providing a person (adult or child) with enough distraction to allow them to better focus on what is being said.
