When ADHD Strategies Stop Working Try This!

It’s always exciting to discover ADHD-friendly tools, apps, or hacks that work for you. A new calendar, journal, or sleep strategy.

I always wonder how I managed without it, and wish I’d found it sooner. My confidence soars, and life is GOOOOOD!

It’s inspiring, until that strategy stops working. Your initial delight turns to despair. “What’s wrong with ME?” “I keep failing MYSELF!” “Why do I even bother?!”

Notice the common theme: the problem is ME, MYSELF, and I.

I’m not the only member of the tribe who tends to catastrophize. With an ADHD predisposition to overreact to bad news, and to good news for that matter, it’s easy to forget the positive difference a particular practice made, at least for a while.

By recognizing that a particular tool or system no longer serves me, and let’s be honest, they are supposed to serve me, I take ME, MYSELF, and I out of the picture.

Then, you have three options:

Tweak it. Drop it. Or try something new.

The funny thing is that tweaking something that stopped working can make it feel new and interesting. And Oh, how our brains love ‘new and interesting.’ In fact, if you think about it, whatever stopped working for you worked just fine when it was ‘new and interesting.’
