I’ve been fighting this myth for decades: “ADHD medication will kill your creativity and turn you into a numb, boring drone.”

It’s true that medication doesn’t work for everyone. Some folks try three or four before finding the right dose of the right medication that works for them. Others don’t like how it makes them feel, which doctors tell me is a sign the dose may be too high, and they revert to other stimulants: caffeine, nicotine, etc. But for myself, and many creative friends in show business, finding a medication has allowed them to be more productive and finish what they start.

For example, my friend Patrick McKenna, co-star of “The Red Green Show”. He waited until we finished making our documentary “ADD & Loving It?” before he tried medication. When I saw him a month or two later, I asked him about his experience. He said, “In the past, I used to have a ton of ideas on Post-Its all over my office. Now, I have a finished script that I can sell.” Writing an episode of television takes weeks. It can be exhausting to keep track of everything. Patrick was finally able to focus, finish what he started, and send it out into the world.
