How ADHD Stays Invisible For Years
An ADHD diagnosis in adulthood is a shock. Suddenly, so many of your struggles, decisions, and quirks start to make sense. So much of what you believed about yourself, not to mention what your friends, coworkers, teachers, and family believed about you, is suddenly up for grabs.
It’s disorienting and even traumatic. “Who am I exactly?”
Trying to explain what you’re going through and help others understand what you’re dealing with is tricky. Believe me, I know.
It’s hard enough to process what’s going on, let alone trying to defend your diagnosis and overcome the denial, dismissal, and disdain from others.
So I offer this analogy that I’ve used to give people a sense of what it’s like to be diagnosed with an invisible spectrum disorder. I’ve used it to great effect in disarming the doubters who scorn the possibility that you might have ADHD. Or, for that matter, any of the spectrum disorders.
